A Note from your School Nurse Teacher
Dear Parent and Guardians,
Your School Nurse Teacher has come up with some helpful guidelines that will help you know whether your child should stay home from school.
The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests answering these three quick questions:
So when should I keep them home? A general guide is helpful, although when in question, or if your child has not seen his/her doctor, please call your SCHOOL NURSE TEACHER.
Fever is the body's way of destroying the germs making it sick, and it's a common symptom of infections such as flu. Keep your children home if they have a temperature. Department of Health recommends that you wait 24 hours until children are fever-free without Tylenol or Motrin before letting them return to school.
Vomiting/Diarrhea Keep children home until stools are formed and your doctor gives the okay. Keep children home if they've vomited twice or more in the last 24 hours. They can return to school after symptoms clear up or your doctor says they're no longer contagious.
Mild cold or respiratory symptoms are no reason to keep children at home so long as their nasal drainage is clear and their cough is mild.
Severe cough and cold symptoms should keep kids home from school. A serious cough could be a sign of contagious conditions such as whooping cough, viral bronchitis, or croup. It can also be a sign of asthma or allergies. If the cough is mild, you may send in cough drops with your child and a note to the school nurse teacher giving permission for the child to carry and use cough drops. If they have an inhaler, a doctor’s order must accompany the inhaler to school.
Sore throats: If your child has been diagnosed with strep throat, keep your child at home for at least 24 hours after starting antibiotics or according to your physician's note.
Earaches aren't contagious. There's no need to keep a child with a mild earache home, as long as your child feels well enough to concentrate in class.
Please call your School Nurse Teacher with any questions, concerns or updates about your child’s health!

Please don't judge people. You don't know what it took someone to get out of bed, look and feel as presentable as possible and face the day. You never truly know the daily struggle of others. - Karen Salmansohn
Please call 401-315-1692 if your child is out sick or will not be in school. We appreciate your help.
In order to volunteer, go on a field trip, etc. you must have a current BCI. BCIs are good only for the current school year, therefore, most BCIs have expired as of 6/30/18. Please review the steps below for new and returning volunteers.
The current WPS Volunteer Process is on the WPS District website under Community/Volunteers.
NEW VOLUNTEERS: Please complete the online 3 step Volunteer Process. This is at no cost to the volunteer. All three steps must be completed in order to finalize the volunteer process.
RETURNING VOLUNTEERS: Returning volunteers need to have an updated Local (RI State) BCI (Criminal Record Release form in Volunteer Process) done every year. If there is NO personal information changes, you do NOT need to complete the application - only the BCI check.
