  • Final Announcement: Powerschool + End of Year Asks

Posted by Michael Sujka on 6/14/2023
    Hello everyone,

I am honored to announce we are moving to Powerschool (in replacement of Skyward) as our new student information system (SIS). We will launch it in September 2024.

Please view this slide deck and accompanying video I created for our Powerschool transition: Slides, Video

We also have a few asks before you leave the school to enjoy the Summer Vacation.

TLDR (too long, didn't read) at the bottom.

The district is moving to Powerschool as our new student information system. There is a tremendous amount of work to do and we will continue to inform everyone on the progress. We are committed to providing training and support before the 2023-2024 school year ends and before we begin the 2024-2025 school year.

We have created this survey to gather needs, wants, and wishes (https://forms.gle/b9UEjzuDUNd4GLRh9). It is not only for our powerschool transition so use it as you may.

As you begin to filter out of the schools we ask that:
    • If you leave your laptop behind, please don't leave it plugged in. Westerly is notorious for power issues: it can damage the battery and cause a host of other issues.
    • Please leave your desktop workstations on. This ensures any patches or updates are applied throughout the summer.
    • Lock up projector pens, remotes, and other peripherals so they are not lost in room cleanings.

    • If you have items you would like us to get rid of, put them in a pile with a note, for us to remove it.

    TLDR:

    Who - Everyone

What - Change of Student Information System + End of Year Asks

    When - September 2024 (Powerschool)

    Where - District wide

Why - We are transitioning to Powerschool for a variety of reasons and needs. Please, if you leave your laptop behind, do not leave it plugged in. Also leave your desktop computers on. Lastly, please leverage the survey (survey link) so this transition and any other item we can assist with are top of mind for us.

Please view this slide deck and accompanying video I created for our Powerschool transition: Slides, Video

    Happy last week of school!

  • Announcement: Website Upgrade

Posted by Michael Sujka on 6/6/2023

    Hello everyone,

This summer we are upgrading our website. We are currently projecting a September 1st launch but it may be sooner. Please view this slide deck and accompanying video I created: Slides, Video

TLDR (too long, didn't read) at the bottom.

There are three major changes I would like to make you aware of:

We are moving our website url from westerly.k12.ri.us to wpsri.org. This means in order to get to our website you would have to type in wpsri.org in your web browser. This also means if you have bookmarked our website you must update the bookmark when the change is live.

Major web search providers (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc) will take time to refresh their search results. You will find that if you type in Westerly Public Schools into the major search providers you may end up going to a now, non-existing website. Therefore it is best to directly navigate/type in wpsri.org in your web browser to get to our website until the search providers can refresh their content.

Secondly, the overall layout will change slightly. This is a general example of design we are moving to: Website template

Lastly, we are spending a tremendous amount of time to make the Search feature on the web page work. This new search feature no longer uses Google search results and instead allows us to display what we believe the user is looking for.

Please view this slide deck and accompanying video I created: Slides, Video

    TLDR:

Who - Everyone including the community

    What - Website Change

    When - Summer 2023

    Where - District wide

Why - Our website is outdated and the last major design update happened in 2017. In addition, the search doesn't work the way we need it. To fix this we are doing several things: our website URL will move from westerly.k12.ri.us to wpsri.org, we will be updating the overall design of the website, and we will be updating the search feature.
